History

Tusculum is a city in Greene County, Tennessee.  The City of Tusculum was chartered on May 12, 1959 and is governed by three commissioners, one of which serves as Mayor and one as Vice-Mayor.  Tusculum’s roots go back to the founding of Tennessee’s oldest college, Tusculum College, making the city “First in Education.”  Founded in 1794, Tusculum College is the oldest college in Tennessee and the 28th oldest in the nation.

The City of Tusculum is 4.5 square miles in area with a population of 2663 (2010 census). The City features 28 miles of roadway with two major state highways running through it.  Traffic is heavy with over 40,000 cars a day passing through.  Traffic is related to the number of schools within the city limits being Doak Elementary School, Chuckey Doak Middle School, Chuckey Doak High School, and Tusculum University.

The City maintains a park with a pavilion that can be rented for special occasions and a linear walking trail that spans 8 miles of scenic beauty as it winds through the campus of Tusculum College and along  Moon Creek adjacent to the Tusculum Bypass.

City services include a police department, street repair and maintenance, and a limited recycling program.  Fire protection is provided by the Tusculum Volunteer Fire Department.
